FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS MALE WAXING

  • Do I need to do any special preparation for a wax, and what should I do afterwards?

Yes. Pre-wax and post-wax care is very important. Download our ADVICE GUIDE which has all the information you need.

  • Are your waxing therapists male or female?

All our waxing therapists are female, highly experienced and qualified.

  • Is male waxing really popular?

Yes it is.  In fact it’s so popular that we're able to specialise only in male grooming

Body-conscious Premiership footballers, smooth athletic divers and cyclists competing in the London 2012 Olympics, and the ‘manscaping’ references from TV celebrities like James Corden and Jonathan Ross have only served to increase the demand for male waxing.

  • What kind of guy gets waxed?

An interesting question.  The majority of our work is for Brazilian waxing.  The vast majority of our clients are forty-something, heterosexual men with kids and a successful career.  So many men in this category have regular Brazilian waxing, but they just don’t talk about it!  (We wish they would!).

The next largest group of clients are 55+ and are keen to maintain their physique and youthful appearance.

  • Will it hurt?

Rather than us telling you that it will all be absolutely totally fine, let’s see what some of our regular clients have to say.  We asked them to rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being most painful) and give a brief comment.

“On a scale of 1-10 I’d say it was a 6, but the thing is it’s only momentary and then it’s gone…”

"What I can tell you with confidence is that you do get used to it, and it gets easier each time you have a treatment.  After a few months you’ll be wondering what all the fuss was about."

"It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.  I was expecting a 10, but it was probably really a 6..."

  • Why do men really wax?

Most men wax for aesthetic reasons (back/chest waxing), but those having Brazilian waxing do so mainly for hygiene reasons and because it makes them feel cooler and more comfortable.  Some of our clients tell us that the resulting benefits in the love life department isn’t insignificant in their decision to have Brazilian waxing!

We frequently wax cyclists and triathletes who will have full leg and Brazilian waxing not only to make their sport more comfortable, but primarily to make roadside treatment of wounds and grazes easier to clean and dress should they have a fall or collision.

  • Do you wax women at Gorilla Warfare?

Generally, we like to keep Gorilla Warfare as a place that men can call their own.  However, our male clients often ask if we will wax their wives, girlfriends etc, so we set up Tarzan & Jane for this purpose.  Click on the links below for details of our Tarzan & Jane ladies waxing service.

  • What if I get aroused during a Brazilian wax treatment?

It happens.  It’s pretty common, especially with a first treatment – but let us reassure you that it will pass pretty quickly as soon as soon the waxing begins!  Does that help?

  • How long will a wax treatment take?

This can vary according to the density of the hair and the actual body size (a hairy 6’ 5” bodybuilder will clearly take a little longer than most other clients).  But here’s a rough guide:

    Back or chest                     20 – 30 mins

    Full leg wax                        45 – 60 mins

    Eyebrows                            15 – 20 mins

    Full Brazilian                      30 – 40 mins

  • How long will the hair-free effect last?

This varies.  There should be very little hair growth within the first 3 weeks or so, and then it may start to increase.  You should leave at least 4 weeks between appointments otherwise the hair may be too short to wax effectively.  Most men have their waxing done every 5-6 weeks.

  • I’m going on holiday, how far in advance should I have my waxing?

We always advise that you leave about 3 days between waxing and going on holiday to give your skin a chance to settle down.  Any redness or soreness needs to have subsided before you expose your skin to the sun.

  • Will I need a patch test before I can have a wax?

You will only need to have a patch test if you have any known allergies or skin sensitivities, or have had an adverse reaction to waxing at some point in the past. If you would like a patch test or are unsure as to your skin sensitivity we would encourage you to have a test 24-48 hours before your treatment. The test takes just 5 minutes and is free of charge.

  • Are there any conditions which mean I won’t be able to have a wax treatment?

If you have any form of contagious skin condition we are unable to wax the affected area until the condition has cleared up.  Sunburnt, chaffed or broken skin cannot be waxed until it is completely healed.  Clients who are taking Roaccutane will need to delay having a wax treatment until at least six months after completing their medication.  Skin that has been treated with steroid creams, Retin-A, Differin or any other retinoid acne products cannot be waxed for three months after the course of treatment has been completed.

  • How do I leave a review of the service I've received at Gorilla Warfare?

We encourage you to leave a review of your experience with us so we can make sure we're offering the best possible service.  Please email us your review or use the Contact Form.  You can view testimonials left by others here.

  • What if I need to cancel my appointment?

We ask that you give us as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.  Unfortunately, due to a high number of last minute cancellations and 'no-shows' we have had to introduce a cancellation policy which means that we will charge the full cost of the treatment for cancellations made within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment time, or for non-attendance of an appointment without notice.

  • Do I need to pay a deposit?

We ask for a 50% deposit when a new client is visiting us for the first time.  We also ask for a 50% deposit for any treatment over £100.  We will email an invoice for the deposit amount and this can be settled by credit/debit card or PayPal online.  The booking is only fully confirmed once the deposit has been received.
